Law Clerk [pdf]
Applications will be accepted by justices of the Texas Supreme Court for one-year law-clerk positions beginning in mid-August 2012. Justices hire two law clerks for one-year terms, although a few two-year positions may be available. Applications are open to all candidates who will have graduated from law school by summer 2012. Strong preference is given to candidates with outstanding academic records and demonstrated writing ability. Individual justices may require their law clerks to sit for the Texas bar examination in July 2012. Each law clerk assists his or her judge with general legal research, studying petitions for review, preparation for oral argument, and researching and drafting opinions. Unlike most appellate courts, the Texas Supreme Court has discretionary review only of civil cases and almost exclusively among appellate courts permits law clerks to sit in conference for its deliberations.

Start dates for the respective sessions typically are in early September, late January and late May. The internship length depends on the hours required by the interns' law schools and each justice's requirements, but a minimum of six consecutive weeks is recommended.
